Interviewing in a Little Black Suit

Since resigning from my last position back in November 2014, I have been incredibly active in the job search. I have sent a TON of resumes, cover letters, applications and reference letters - so many that I have lost count.  It has been exhausting and overwhelming, to say the least! But it is all worth it when I receive a phone call or email notifying me that I have been selected for an in-person interview.

Today I am sharing you my go-to interview look that I've been wearing on my recent interviews.  Of course, this depends on what position you're interviewing for, your comfort level, and your own personal style.  Personally, I have never been a fan of the black suit because I think it's too stark and overwhelms my narrow frame.  But a few years ago, I was at LOFT, and found an alternative to the typical black suit - what I now coin the "little black suit." Instead of a long sleeve blazer, it is short sleeved and has a tie around the waist, which is perfect for adding curves to a slender frame.  Every time I wear this little black suit, I feel very professional and confident.  Even though it is short sleeved, I think it can work for many interviews, depending on how you dress it up.  As long as you look polished and confident, I think that's the most important thing!

I added a nude top with some laser cut details underneath the blazer. I think it adds a unique touch to the suit.  With these kinds of suits, you can pair it will all sorts of tops, whatever makes you feel great.  When you look good, you feel good! (And can focus on WOW-ing the interviewer!)

I am so sorry for the dirty mirror!
Black Suit: LOFT
Nude Top: Nordstrom Rack

When I'm interviewing, I keep my makeup pretty minimal. Nothing too crazy like a red lip or smoky eyes! (Unless you're interviewing at a night club, of course)

Products used: Diorshow Maximer lash plumping serum, Clinique Lash Doubling mascara, Laura Mercier eye primer, Milani eye brow pencil, Almay eyeliner, Origins eye shadow in Cream Puff underneath the brow bones and in the inner corners, Origins eye shadow in Toasted Sesame on the crease, and ColourPop eye shadow in Smash (I think I've already mentioned several times how I LOVE playing with the ColourPop eye shadows - it makes putting on makeup SO much fun!)

On the face: Dior HydraLife moisturizer, Benefit the Pore Professional, Nourish Organic eye cream (from Ipsy Glam Bag), Maybelline Instant Age Rewind concealer, and Maybelline FitMe powder.

Lips: Maybelline Baby Lips lip balm and ColourPop Lippie Stix in Brink (the perfect color to look polished!)
Cheeks: Mac blush in Warm Soul

For my hair, I like doing a half up, half down look, and I make sure to style my bangs a bit (mostly to get them out of my eyes!).  I always feel so sharp and put together in this suit and makeup look.  What do you wear when you're interviewing? Do you ever go with a bolder makeup look to stand out? I'd love to know!

Thanks so much for visiting, and wish me luck as I continue on my search for a new job!!!

  1. I'm currently looking for a job as well and so I usually wear black smart trousers with a nice white detailed shirt and a blazer. I hate putting my hair up though because I look younger so I try to style my hair down nicely! Great post :)

  2. Thanks, Jessie! I love black trousers, but they don't look good on me! I agree, putting your hair up makes you look younger, and also I think it's too stark. I like it down since it makes me feel more approachable. Thanks so much for visiting, and good luck on your job search!!

  5. Awww, thank you, Liz!! At first, I thought the short sleeves made the outfit unprofessional, but then I thought it's such a minor detail that I'm sure no one even notices! I'm hoping something good turns up soon too - I just have to keep on keepin' on and stay positive! :) Thanks for visiting!!

    1. Thank you, thank you, Chloe!! Yes, it's definitely discouraging, BUT I'm trying this thing where I try not to let the rejections get to me (it's a work in progress). Just brush it off! Thanks so much for visiting!
